Gin

Originating in Europe by at least the 11th century Gin has been a classic spirit popularized largely in England in 1700’s. Though it is primarily a grain liquor flavored with juniper berries many varietals exist incorporating a bevy of other botanicals. It is the foundation of the traditional martini.

While many brands exist today there are a few notable for their rarity and exceptional taste.

Old Raj is one such brand distilled at WM Cadenhead in Scotland. While expensive this gin is worth the experience. Old Raj is particularly known for its color – a pale yellow or amber – originating from the use of saffron during distillation.

Hendricks is a commonly found high-end gin. It is consider a lighter, very palatable liquor due to the use of cucumber and rose infusion.

Plymouth is produced in Plymouth, England and is consistently very highly rated. It is a smoother version of the traditional London dry gin

Newer to the scene:

Martin Miller’s gin – developed at the end of the 1990’s this gin is the product of three Englishman who sought at any expense to make the best gin possible. As a result they use a remarkable number of spices and botanicals in their production. They only batch distill their gin and then ship it to Iceland in order to combine it with the purest water available.

Blade gin – created by Old World Spirits which is family owned in Belmont, California (SF bay area). They just started production in the last 2 years and have garnered quite a bit of fanfare for their excellent spirits.

Sloane’s dry gin – produced at Toorank distillery based in the Netherlands. This gin has won a number of awards including Best Gin at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
